A lovely gift in the Santa Cruz coffee shop of Coimbra

At the heart of Coimbra, one of the oldest university towns in Europe, stands the most amazing coffee shop in Portugal. Housed in the former auxiliary chapel of the Cathedral of Santa Cruz, it has become a central gathering point for students and teachers. Curiously, this chapel has been over time, successively a hardware store, a police station, a plumbing shop, and even it seems, a fire station before being the coffee shop with Neo-Renaissance stained glass that we know today.
Fascinated by the architecture with its Manueline vaults, I chose my point of view, pulled out my sketchbook and started to sketch directly felt.
Absorbed by the drawing, I did not notice the waiter who approached me. He gently took out of his tray a postcard of the coffee shop and handed it to me. In perfect French, he told me that the old professor sat at the back of the room, observing how much I enjoyed the location, has asked him to buy for him the postcard in order to offer it to me.
The old professor stood up, greeted me and walked out of the cofee shop, leaving me alone with his precious gift. I looked at the logo in the corner of the postcard and decided i would add it to the drawing as a testimony of this lovely encounter.

Mon précieux cadeau au café Santa Cruz de Coimbra
Au cœur de Coimbra, l’une des plus vieilles villes universitaires d’Europe se trouve l’un des plus surprenants café-restaurants du Portugal. Abrité dans l’ancienne ancienne chapelle auxiliaire de la cathédrale de Santa Cruz, il est devenu le point central de rassemblement des étudiants et des professeurs. Curieusement cette chapelle a été successivement, au fil du temps, une quincaillerie, un poste de police, un magasin de plomberie, et même paraît-il, une caserne de pompiers avant de devenir le café aux vitraux Neo-Renaissance que l’on connaît aujourd’hui.
Conquis par l’architecture des voutes avec leurs nervures manuélines, j’ai choisi mon point de vue, sorti mon carnet de croquis et attaqué directement le croquis au feutre.
Absorbé par le dessin, je n’ai pas remarqué le serveur qui s’est approché de moi. Il a pris délicatement sur son plateau la carte postale du café et me l’a tendu. Dans un français parfait, il m’a expliqué que le vieux professeur assis au fond de la salle, observant combien je goutais l’endroit, l’avait chargé d’acheter la carte postale du café pour me l’offrir.
Le vieux professeur s’est levé, m’a salué et est sorti me laissant son précieux cadeau. J’ai regardé le logo du café imprimé sur la carte postale et décidé de l’ajouter à mon dessin en souvenir de cette charmante rencontre.

 

I tried but i could not rescue “The Don” in Porto

With its countless white facades, which rise above the banks of the Douro, Sandeman seems to have become over time, the undisputed sponsor of the City of Porto.
I must say that, with its false Zorro look, the emblem of this famous brand of Porto seems to be immediately familiar. “The Don” creates a sense of complicity and invites the consumer to a wine tasting in one of the many wineries that overlook the river banks under the shadow of the metallic bridge built by Eiffel.
Excited by the haughty air of this enigmatic figure, I was carried away by my topic, filling nearly every square inch of my page, until I realize I was spoiling the whole drawing. I tried in vain to save it, adding some blue color to figure the “Azulejos” and a text far too talkative, but i could not rescue “The Don”. I should probably try again…or drink a few Porto glasses before

Je n’ai rien pu faire pour sauver “Le Don” de la débâcle

Avec ses innombrables façades chaulées qui s’étagent au dessus des berges du Douro, Sandeman semble être devenu au fil du temps, le sponsor incontesté de la ville de Porto.
Il faut reconnaître qu’avec son faux air de Zorro, la figure emblématique de cette célèbre marque de Porto nous est immédiatement familière. « The Don » installe aussitôt la connivence avec le passant l’invitant à la dégustation dans l’un des nombreux chais qui surplombent les berges du fleuve à l’ombre du pont métallique bâti par Eiffel au XIXème siècle.
Enthousiasmé par l’air altier de cette figure énigmatique, J’ai été emporté par mon sujet investissant chaque cm2 de la page, jusqu’à ce que je réalise que j’étais en train de tout gâcher. J’ai essayé de sauver le dessin en le rehaussant du bleu des azulejos et d’un texte beaucoup trop bavard. Hélas, je n’ai pas réussi à sauver « Le Don » de la débâcle. Il faudra que je recommence…ou boire un ou deux verres de Porto d’abord.

Portugal: The Cistercian Monastery of Alcobaça requires a minimalist drawing

The Alcobaça Monastery was built in the twelfth century by King Alfonso I to mark his victory against the Moors. Not less than three quarters of a century were needed to build this massive abbey, embellished by his successors and considered a masterpiece of Cistercian art.

The purity of this architecture requires a minimalist design where one has little room for error: a few verticals and interlaced arches where the hand must not shiver. For a long time, this page stayed unfinished with the single drawing of the chapter house, until one day I discovered in a merchant color shop white Posca markers. As a schoolboy pleased with his new tools, I rushed to play with the different sizes of tips and added the ground map of the abbey, surprised to discover that the harmony of this place arose out of a lot of asymmetry .

Portugal: Le Monastère cistercien d’Alcobaça impose un dessin minimaliste

Le Monastère d’Alcobaça  fut construit au XIIème siècle par le roi Alphonse Ier pour marquer sa victoire contre les Maures. Pas moins de trois quarts de siècle furent nécessaires pour édifier cette abbaye massive, embellie par ses successeurs et considérée comme un chef d’œuvre de l’art cistercien. 

La pureté de cette architecture impose un dessin minimaliste où l’on n’a guère le droit à l’erreur : quelques verticales et des arcs entrelacés où la main ne doit pas trembler. Pendant longtemps, cette page est restée inachevée avec la seule vue de la salle capitulaire, jusqu’à ce qu’un jour je déniche chez un marchand de couleurs des feutres blancs Posca. Tel un collégien ravi de ses nouveaux outils, je me suis précipité pour jouer avec les différentes tailles de feutres et rajouter le plan de masse de l’abbaye, tout étonné de découvrir que l’harmonie du lieu découlait en fait de beaucoup d’asymétrie.

Portugal – The fantastic octopus of the Lisbonne aquarium has obviously impressed me

At the heart of Parque das Nações, the new Lisbonne neighborhood built to host the World Expo of1998, stands the Océanorio, the largest aquarium in Europe. Landed on the water this amazing futuristic building is covered with a corrugated glass roof suggesting sea waves.

The giant aquarium surrounded by four swimming pools has an incredible wildlife. For once relegating the architecture to the second rank in the drawing, I wanted to try what could be a naturalistic drawing in two colors. I could not draw on the spot because of the crowd. So I picked up a simple flyer advertising the aquarium and flashed on a very inspiring little picture of a wonderful octopus. In the end, the result is rather encouraging. I should try more naturalist drawings in the future…

De toute évidence, le poulpe de l’aquarium de Lisbonne m’a impressionné

Au cœur du Parc des Nations, nouveau quartier de Lisbonne édifié pour accueillir l’Exposition Universelle de 1998, se dresse l’Océanorio, le plus grand aquarium d’Europe. Posé sur l’eau cet étonnant bâtiment futuriste est recouvert d’un toit de verre ondulé pour suggérer des vagues.

Un aquarium géant entouré de 4 piscines abrite une faune incroyable. Reléguant pour une fois l’architecture au second rang, j’ai voulu changer et voir ce que pouvait donner un dessin naturaliste en deux couleurs. Ne pouvant dessiner sur place en raison de la foule, j’ai ramassé un simple prospectus publicitaire de l’aquarium et flashé sur la petite photo d’un superbe poulpe. Au final, le résultat est plutôt encourageant…et donne envie de poursuivre dans la veine du dessin naturaliste !

Sintra – Palacio da Pena, a Bavarian castle in Portugal

At the top of one of the peaks overlooking Sintra, stands an amazing baroque palace built in the nineteenth century by Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. With its quirky shapes and its outstanding blood-red walls and washed lemon yellow, it seems to have escaped from a Disney park.

Here, in the drawing, white seems to suit it much better. But at the end of my work, I clumsily made a few small spots of gouache inadvertently. My first reaction was to find how to remove them, until I finally decided to add some more blots, accentuating the fantasy of this strange construction.

Sintra – Le Palacio da Pena, l’incroyable chateau bavarois au Portugal

Au sommet de l’une des cimes surplombant Sintra se dresse un incroyable château baroque construit par le prince Ferdinand de Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha au XIXème siècle. Avec ses excroissances biscornues et ses étonnantes façades rouge sang et jaune citron, il semble s’être échappé d’un parc de Disney.

Sur le dessin le blanc semble mieux lui convenir. Mais à la fin de mon travail, j’ai maladroitement fait quelques taches de gouache par inadvertance. Après avoir longuement réfléchi pour tenter de les supprimer, j’ai finalement décidé d’en rajouter, accentuant ainsi le caractère féérique de cette étrange construction.

Portugal – The window of the Convent of Christ in Tomar is a well-known example of Manueline style.

In Tomar, there is a wonderful monument built by the Templars in the twelfth century, the Convento de Cristo, a monumental monastery perched on the hill overlooking the city: a maze of cloisters, corridors, stairways, chapels and refectories built over time in a succession of different architectural styles
Overlooking the cloister of Santa Barbara, the gothic nave of the church has an exceptional huge window, very emblematic of the Manueline architecture: a flamboyant decor with nautical elements inspired from the Great Discoveries: ropes, shells, corals, algae …
This drawing, hastily executed in the cloister with a brush and china ink has long staid in black, unfinished. The disappointing smoky result could not recall the exuberance of the architecture. Until one day, I decided to open a tube of gouache and try to to illuminate it with a few touches of white …
..and finally give it a little relief!

Portugal – La fenêtre du Couvent du Christ à Tomar,  emblématique du style Manuélin.

A Tomar, il y a un merveilleux monument bâti par l’ordre du Temple au XIIème siècle : le Convento de Cristo, un couvent monumental perché sur la colline qui surplombe la ville : un entrelacs de cloitres, de corridors, d’escaliers, de chapelles et de réfectoires construit au fil du temps dans une succession de styles architecturaux

La nef gothique de l’église s’ouvre sur le cloitre de Saint Barbara par une énorme fenêtre emblématique de l’architecture manuéline : un décor flamboyant aux éléments marins inspiré des Grandes Découvertes : cordages, coquillages, coraux, algues…

Ce dessin, brossé rapidement dans le cloitre, au pinceau et à l’encre de chine est longtemps resté en noir, inachevé. Le résultat charbonneux ne parvenait pas a restituer l’exubérance de l’architecture. Jusqu’à ce qu’un jour, je me décide à déboucher un tube de gouache pour l’éclairer de quelques touches de blanc…                                               …et lui donner enfin un peu de relief !

Portugal – Evora

Evora, is a lovely little town in the heart of Alentejo. You should not miss to browse the web of its old streets and let be surprised by the many surprising discoveries: an monumental door with its Manueline architecture, the ruins of a Roman temple, a Renaissance fountain, old azulejos or the remains of an old millennium aqueduct … 

Evora, est une adorable petite ville au coeur de l’Alentejo.
Il faut parcourir la toile arachnéeenne de ses ruelles et se laisser porter au gré des découvertes; une porte  monumentale à l’architecture manueline, les ruines d’un temple romain, une une fontaine renaissance, de vieux azulejors ou les restes d’un vieil aqueduc millénaire…

Portugal – Porto

Porto is nested on both sides of the Douro gorge. The Maria Pia viaduct built by Eiffel spans across the river, while the Porto cellars stage on the southern slope of the river.

I thought i could play in two tones, white & brown until i realized i needed a third color to figure the light reflected on tile roofs.

Portugal – Boats in the ria d’Aveiro

Drawing in brown and white is great fun; however i could not resist to add a few strokes of color when i saw these traditional fishing boats (so called Moliceiros)in the little town of Aveiro. Every boat has its own pattern and set of colors which makes a enchanted place of this little harbor.

Portugal – Sintra Palacio National

Portugal was one of my most surprising drawing experiences. I was fascinated by the fact that this country (at least the architecture) seemed to be a two-tone land: brown from stone and white from lime on the walls.
Unusually, I had taken with me a notebook with brown pages. So, rather than allowing empty spaces on my sheet of watercolor paper to figure the white walls as I would have normally done, I decided to reverse things. I bought a tube of white gouache and loved playing in dual tone.
