Time for a beer at The White Lion in Covent Garden

The difficult choice when you’re drawing a pub is to decide between having a drink first and draw  after or on the contrary go for a beer once the drawing is completed. I must say the rainy weather helped me answer this tricky question. I took a quick snapshot and ordered a pint of bitter in the warmth of the Pub. I decided i would postpone the drawing once back at home.

Le choix le plus difficile lorsque vous dessinez un pub est de décider si l’on boit avant de dessiner ou au contraire de n’aller prendre une bière que lorsque le dessin est terminé. Je dois dire que le mauvais temps pluvieux m’a aidé à répondre à cette question délicate. J’ai pris une photo rapide pour aller commander au chaud une pinte de “bitter”. J’ai finalement reporté le dessin au soir à la maison.

Hampton Court and its symphony of Tudor chimneys

Contrasting with a Victorian London in bright red and black, Hampton Court Palace stands in brick red and black soot, with its strange ballet of Tudor chimneys. Jewel of British medieval architecture, it foreshadows the Renaissance. From one country to another, it is ultimately the very same story of a palace built by a close relative of the King (here Cardinal Wolsey, archbishop of York and Chief Minister of Henry VIII) and confiscated by the King following a sudden (and happy) disgrace.

The highlight of this strange building is an amazing forest of chimneys finely crafted that rises from the roof. I took advantage of the warm spring to wedge myself comfortably tucked in a corner of the park. I cut and pasted in my notebook the garden map that I completed with a quick drawing in sepia ink with an old fountain pen (Lamy Safari for curious people).

Au Londres Victorien en rouge et noir, répond le palais d’Hampton Court rouge brique et noir de suie, avec son étrange ballet de cheminées Tudor. Fleuron de l’architecture médiévale britannique, il annonce déjà la Renaissance. D’un pays à l’autre, c’est finalement toujours la même histoire de palais édifié par un proche du Roi (ici le Cardinal Wolsey, archevêque d’York et Lord Chancelier) et confisqué par le Roi à la suite d’une subite (et heureuse) disgrâce.

L’élément marquant de cet étrange édifice est l’étonnante forêt de cheminées finement ouvragées qui s’élève du toit. J’ai profité de la douceur du printemps pour me caler confortablement à l’écart dans un coin du parc. J’ai découpé et collé sur mon carnet le plan du jardin que j’ai complété avec un dessin rapide à l’une encre sépia avec un vieux stylo plume (Lamy Safari pour les curieux).

London in black and red

I like the idea that a place could be summarized into a very small set of tones. With no doubt, London would be synthesized in black and red. There are a lot of towns that could go this way: Rome in ocher and green, New york in brown and yellow, Paris in grey and green… And you, which set of colors would you put for which town ?

J‘aime l’idée qu’un lieu puisse se résumer en une palette très réduite de couleurs. Sans aucun doute, Londres serait synthétisée en noir et rouge. Et Il y a beaucoup de villes qui pourraient se résumer à un jeu de 2 couleurs: Rome en ocre et  vert, New york en brun et jaune, Paris en gris et vert … Et vous, quelles couleurs verriez vous pour quelles villes ?
