Contrasting with a Victorian London in bright red and black, Hampton Court Palace stands in brick red and black soot, with its strange ballet of Tudor chimneys. Jewel of British medieval architecture, it foreshadows the Renaissance. From one country to another, it is ultimately the very same story of a palace built by a close relative of the King (here Cardinal Wolsey, archbishop of York and Chief Minister of Henry VIII) and confiscated by the King following a sudden (and happy) disgrace.
The highlight of this strange building is an amazing forest of chimneys finely crafted that rises from the roof. I took advantage of the warm spring to wedge myself comfortably tucked in a corner of the park. I cut and pasted in my notebook the garden map that I completed with a quick drawing in sepia ink with an old fountain pen (Lamy Safari for curious people).

Au Londres Victorien en rouge et noir, répond le palais d’Hampton Court rouge brique et noir de suie, avec son étrange ballet de cheminées Tudor. Fleuron de l’architecture médiévale britannique, il annonce déjà la Renaissance. D’un pays à l’autre, c’est finalement toujours la même histoire de palais édifié par un proche du Roi (ici le Cardinal Wolsey, archevêque d’York et Lord Chancelier) et confisqué par le Roi à la suite d’une subite (et heureuse) disgrâce.
L’élément marquant de cet étrange édifice est l’étonnante forêt de cheminées finement ouvragées qui s’élève du toit. J’ai profité de la douceur du printemps pour me caler confortablement à l’écart dans un coin du parc. J’ai découpé et collé sur mon carnet le plan du jardin que j’ai complété avec un dessin rapide à l’une encre sépia avec un vieux stylo plume (Lamy Safari pour les curieux).
